I have taken almost all the required course this major need in order to graduate, but there is one class affected me the most was my HTM 301 class. As the first class for upper division coursework this class, taught me things I didn’t know about my self as a person and what a leader should look like. We had a print assessment that categorized us in one of nine personality characteristics with a major and a minor grade.
My Print is 5 Major and 9 Minor. As a person who likes this are smart and knowledgeable, with curious and inquiring minds. When a 5/9 expresses a position, it is usually in the form of a well-organized and cogent argument, making it difficult for a person on the other end to reject the 5/9’s point of view. In their areas of expertise, they really know how to become leaders. They can provide through explanations when inquiries are made. They generally prefer to think things through and plan out what they are going to say in advance, rather than engage in extemporaneous dialogue. For example, I can be a good public speaker when I prepare well, but when in a general occasion, I become talk less and too shy to speak because not every topic is my specialty. In the other hand, smart can be stubborn and knowledgeable can be preoccupied too. As a leader, stubborn and preoccupied is least preferred. I have to learn how to control my attitude.
5/9’s are independent and highly self-sufficient individuals. Although personable and likeable, they judiciously guard their space and privacy, keeping unwanted emotional intrusions at a distance. Sometimes unresponsive, they can appear preoccupied and remote, even withholding of information that they hoard in their personal domain. Even though I am a person like this, I can be a good listener. The audience is an essential role in the communication. I will patiently listen to the needs or opinions of employees, analyzed, and then give me an honest answer.
Another thing that I have done in this class was interviewing with the hospitality industry professionals. This interview project really made me get out of my conform zone and interview with the industry managers. I have never interview before and I am too shy to speak with others in English who I did not know well, but lucky all my interview were very patient and help me get through this. As I interview with them, I feels like leaders and managers have a different mind set with students’. It also gave me an opportunity to have more connection with the managers.
The reason why I like this class was because I found those assessments were very valuable. I learned a lot about myself and from other industry professionals by interview with them. I realizing how a personality will affect a person’s leadership style, it better prepared me to understand my strength and weaknesses.
