Working in Estancia La Jolla I have learned the relationship style of connecting people together. As a front desk agent, my job is not only to check people in and out. Lots of the time, I need to work with different department such as valet, housekeeping and food and beverage. It needs a good communication skills and relationship. In my guide book, it mentions 10 tips for success in Estancia, one of them describe employees need to have an eye contact with people when they are 10 feet’s near you. And also follow by a smile and greeting. Even thought not every employee speaks good English in here, but everyone in our hotel follows this rule, employees remember each other’s name, and it makes us feel good about it. The other thing that I have learned from Estancia is about teamwork. We all understand everyone have different problem. When a guest comes in with complain, we try our best to comfort the guest. When we ask different department for help, they never say no to us, because we know we are a team, we need to work together in order to get our job done, to make our guests happy. In addition, we hire an employee, we wont just throw him on spot and work, we will hands on teach him how things work out and don’t afraid to ask questions.

One thing that I like Estancia most is our company put their employees at the first place. They know that only take good care their employee, and their employee will take good care their guests. Our management team also very supportive, my manager always empowers us to do discussions. If a guest complain about he didn’t have a good stay here, we can decide what we can do to make this guest happy. Such as a guest complain he ask for housekeeping for two days, but no one comes up to clean his room. We can adjust the hotel resort fee from guest’s bill without asking our manager. All we need to do is to provide a reasonable reason when we provide the report to our manager. When we make mistake, my manager wont blame us, he will try to explain what we did wrong and how we can improve. He said that the only way to get us better is to learn form the mistakes. |
Estancia La Jolla Hotel and SPA is the first hotel that I work for, it have been changeling me a lot. At first, I know nothing about working in a hotel; I don’t know what is going to happen with me. I am a full time student with 5 classes and also being a full time worker. My friend who worked at a hotel before, she told me that it is going to be hard and difficult. It gave me lots of pressure and burthen. I don’t know whether I can handle it or not. I talked with my manager about how I feel and how to balance school and work. He told me I need to take it easy. I can catch up my work slowly, and I should not afraid to make any mistake, everything can be fixed. He said he could see my hard work. He thinks I will get better when I get used to my work.

I think Estancia La Jolla Hotel and SPA is a great place for having an internship. It opened my eyes into a real world of hotel industry. It is hard for me to be a full time student and worker at the same time, but I finally get through it. It helped me build my network and improve my communication skill. I have learned a lot about the hotel and also met many new friends in my work place. Being a front desk is not like what I though before, it is not an easy job, but I am glad that I have a chance to work with hotel and explore the industry. I get to know more and decide whether this is the job that I want to do in the future.
